Actress. Born May 3, 1975, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Christina Hendricks' mother was a psychologist and her father was a British-born forester who worked for the United States Forest Service. Shortly after Hendricks' birth, the family moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, a small, quiet town where one of the few activities available for children was community theater. "My mom got my brother and I involved in a community theater group, so we could create our own fun," Hendricks recalls. "And that's where it all started for me.
She began acting at school and went into modeling at the age of 18. In her early 20s she also began appearing on TV, landing a recurring role in "Beggars and Choosers" (1999) in 2000 and another on "Kevin Hill" (2004) before rising to international fame in "Mad Men" (2007).
As well as her more famously conventional awards nominations (Emmys) and wins (SAG Awards) she also won a SyFy Genre Award in for "Best Special Guest/Television" for her role as Saffron in Joss Whedon's short-lived "Firefly" (2002).
Christina Hendricks jump-started her career on television in the early 2000s, with a particularly effective multi-episode contribution to the medical drama ER. On that program, she played Joyce, a battered housewife given solace -- and shelter -- by one of the female employees of Cook County Hospital.
